Nagpur: Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) has invited applications to its Master of Technology (M.Tech) Programme for Research. Interested candidates may apply until 15th June, 2026.
Similar to Ph.D. course models, the programme has a duration of three to five years, and has limited coursework i.e. 4-5 courses along with research methodology. This coursework may include departmental courses, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) courses, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and hybrid learning modules.
The intake system for this programme implements supernumerary seats. Under the departments of Architecture & Planning Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engg., Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engg., and Mining Engineering, as well as the Centre for Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) & Nanotechnology, VNIT offers a total of 23 M.Tech programmes; each of these has 5 supernumerary seats. The seats for the M.Tech (Research) Programme will, therefore, be over and above the existing M. Tech. course capacity and will not affect the regular M. Tech. admissions. Moreover, due to supernumerary seats, no reservation policies are applicable.
The programme is open to candidates with a background in Engineering, Architecture, or interdisciplinary fields. As such, it requires a Bachelor’s degree in these domains (B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch.) as a basic qualification, and a minimum C.G.P.A. of 6.0. At least five years of experience as an industry professional, teacher, or a non-teaching staff member of an academic institution are desired. Grade Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores are not mandatory, though applicants qualified through this examination may submit their scorecard if they wish to.
Along with these qualifications, candidates are also required to submit an Experience Certificate; a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their current employer; a Statement of Purpose (SOP), consisting of a Research Execution Plan of maximum two pages with a tentative title, covering objectives, plan of work, and domain of expertise; and the application fee receipt. A Sponsorship Certificate may be submitted, only if applicable.
Applications are to be submitted through the Google Form provided on VNIT’s official website. Those candidates applying to multiple departments or programmes are to submit separate forms for each. A fee of ₹500 is to be paid per application.
After the submission of the Google Form, candidates will receive a PDF copy of their completed application on their e-mail address. This copy is to be printed out and submitted alongside the payment receipt and self-attested photocopies of relevant documents and testimonials by either speed post or hand delivery before 15th June to the following address: The Deputy Registrar (Academic), Academic Section, VNIT, South Ambazari Road, Nagpur – 440010 (M.S.). “M.Tech (Research)”, the name of the department, and the name of the M.Tech Programme the candidate is applying to, should all be mentioned on the envelope.
For the selection procedure, candidates will have to deliver a presentation on their research proposal before the Research Progress Committee (RPC). This will be followed by a personal interview, and a written entrance test. Evaluations will be performed by a committee constituted by the Chairman of the Board of Studies (BoS) of the respective department, consisting of all the BoS members.
The list of eligible candidates will be displayed on the official website of the institution on 1st July, 2026.
