TISS to Host Five Day Residential Community Health Practice Lab in Shahpur

A five-day immersive workshop titled “Doing Health in Villages” will be held from March 26 to 30, 2026, combining classroom learning at TISS Mumbai with supervised field immersion in Aghai, Shahpur.

Mumbai: The School of Social Work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, through its Field Action Project Pragati – Integrated Rural Health and Development Project, has announced a five-day residential Community Health Practice Lab titled “Doing Health in Villages.” The programme will run from March 26 to March 30, 2026.

Designed as an immersive learning experience, the workshop bridges academic theory and grassroots health practice. Participants will spend 2.5 days at the TISS Mumbai campus engaging with theoretical frameworks and campus-based sessions, followed by 2.5 days of supervised field immersion at Pragati’s long-standing field site in Aghai, Shahpur, in Thane district.

Rooted in over four decades of engagement with tribal communities in the region, the practice lab focuses on participatory methods, community mobilisation, and ethnographic approaches to understanding how health systems function in everyday village life.

The residential format allows participants to closely observe and engage with rural health realities beyond formal clinics and hospitals, while learning ethical community engagement tools such as Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA).

The programme is open to postgraduate students, early-career professionals working in NGOs and CSR initiatives, monitoring and evaluation staff, and applied researchers seeking field-based skills in rural and tribal health contexts.

The participation fee is ₹25,000, which includes food and accommodation. Travel costs to and from Mumbai or Aghai must be borne by participants. A certificate will be issued by TISS, Mumbai, in collaboration with Pragati.
