Students give a colorful transformation to Premnagar Vashat in Marketyard

*With collaborative involvement of students and locals, the space was painted with bright colours, patterns, and games for children.

Pune: A 7,000 sqft street space in Premnagar Vasahat, Marketyard recently saw a colourfultransformation. The street was earlier underutilised, unsafe for women & children,and mostly used for parking. In light of International Women’s Day, a social initiative workshop was conceived as a part of a cultural fest by SMEF’s Brick Group of Institutes that aimed to give the space rightfully back to its people as a safe, inclusive and vibrant public space. The approach of the workshop was through a Tactical Urbanism intervention. Tactical urbanism refers to design solutions that are temporary and low-cost, that aim to bring larger, neighbourhood level impacts.

With collaborative involvement of students and locals, the space was painted with bright colours, patterns, and games for children. The initiative saw the light of day with the support of Hon. MLA Smt. Madhuri Misal and President of SMEF’s Brick School of Architecture along with  Hon. MLA Shri. Sunil Kamble and the Pune Municipal Corporation.

The energetic space was conceptualised by Ar. Meghana Patel & Ar. Rohit Gadiya from Studio Infill. The detailing and implementation was undertaken by students of SMEF’s BRICK Group of Institutes, with the support of Founder-Director Ms. Pooja Misal; Principal, SMEF’s Brick School of Architecture, Dr. Poorva Keskar; Academic coordinator BSOA, Ar. Manali Deshmukh; HOD, SMEF’s Brick School of Interior Design, Ar. Mayuresh Shirolkar, faculty coordinators Bhagyashree Bandekar, Ninad Rewatkar and Sudhir Deshpande, and student coordinators Shruti Khandelwal, Atharva Shinde, Parth Sabl and Atharva Vanjari.

The transformed space was opened out to the public from 10th March with a festive event full of games, music and dance. The event received an overwhelming participation and more than 125children from the Vasahat joined in for an evening filled with fun.The space was received with a lot of excitement and joy by the locals who were actively involved through the entire process. The quick, low-cost transformation will continue till Sunday (13-03-2022) with activities catering to all age groups.
