Somaiya University Hosts Symposium Honouring Prof. Shridhar R. Gadre

National event brings scientists together to celebrate Prof. Gadre’s legacy in computational chemistry and promote interdisciplinary research

Mumbai: Somaiya Vidyavihar University organised a National Symposium on Computational Science to honour the 75th birthday and illustrious career of Prof. Shridhar R. Gadre, one of India’s most respected computational chemists. The event, held in collaboration with the Srinivasa Ramanujan Institute for Basic Sciences (SRIBS), was convened by the Centre for Excellence in Computational Science and Simulations (C2S2).

The symposium brought together leading researchers from IISER Mohali, IIT Madras, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Digital University Kerala, and international institutions from Germany and Italy. Over the course of the day, participants engaged in technical presentations, interdisciplinary panels, and a poster showcase featuring emerging scholars.

“Computational science has moved beyond single disciplines. Today, it drives innovation across chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. Symposia like this create the space we need for deeper academic collaboration, especially when science must turn more integrative and solution-focused,” said Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University.

Prof. Gadre’s pioneering contributions to quantum chemistry were a central theme of the event. He is renowned for developing the molecular tailoring approach (MTA), which allows reliable and computationally feasible studies of very large molecules and clusters using advanced ab initio quantum chemical methods. His career spans over 240 research publications, decades of leadership at Savitribai Phule Pune University, and the mentorship of more than 20 doctoral scholars. Among his numerous accolades are the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, INSA Fellowship, and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Chemical Society.

“Prof. Gadre’s career reflects what academic leadership should stand for: scientific clarity, intellectual depth, and the ability to train generations of researchers. This symposium wasn’t just a celebration of legacy. It was a reflection of the future his work continues to influence,” said Prof. S. Sivaram, Professor of Eminence at Somaiya Vidyavihar University.

With this event, Somaiya Vidyavihar University reinforced its commitment to fostering a research-driven academic culture that values interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and innovation.
