ONGC, IIT Bombay Sign MoU Under MC Square Plus Ignite to Boost Energy Innovation

ONGC hosted the Mumbai City Connect of MC²⁺ Ignite at IIT Bombay on September 8, 2026, where MC²⁺ Foundation, IIT Bombay and SINE signed a tripartite MoU to strengthen India's energy innovation ecosystem and support early-stage startups.

ONGC, IIT Bombay, and MC² Foundation Collaborate to Enhance Indias Energy Innovation Ecosystem

The MC²⁺ Foundation partnered with the IIT Bombay Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SINE) to create new pathways for energy technologies developed in labs. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) hosted the Mumbai City Connect of MC²⁺ Ignite at IIT Bombay.

The collaboration builds a unique combination of stakeholders, consisting of a major public sector energy organisation, a premier research and academic institution, a startup, and an innovation accelerator..

About MC² Ignite

MC²⁺ Ignite focuses on early-stage energy startup innovations that will solve challenges that are relevant to the Indian Energy Sector. The Mumbai City Connect is the first of many such events that will be conducted as part of the program. Up to thirty early-stage high-potential energy startups will be supported by this MC²⁺ Ignite program. The selected startups will receive financial support of up to ₹2 crore.

The support provided will consist of:

  • Financial support of up to ₹50 lakh
  • Financial support of up to ₹1.5 crore
  • Access to the requisite technical support
  • Use of research facilities and laboratories
  • Support of academic and industry mentors
  • Pilot opportunities
  • Industry engagement and market access

The IIT Bombay Centre of Excellence in Oil, Gas and Energy also supports this program.

ONGC to Work With IIT Bombay and SINE on Seven Innovation Areas

As a partner PSU within MC²+, ONGC's focus is to recognise IIT Bombay and SINE in AI-centered Subsurface Intelligence and six other Energy Innovation Streams. The seven components of the program are:

  • AI-centered Subsurface Intelligence
  • Next-generation drilling and well completion technologies
  • Hydrogen and Mobility
  • Bioenergy, with a special emphasis on Compressed Biogas (CBG)
  • Refinery process intensification and catalysis
  • Digital asset management
  • Other relevant innovations in the Energy Sector

The focus of the program is beyond the conventional Oil and Gas technologies, with an emphasis on AI, Hydrogen and Bioenergy, and Digital Asset Management.

From Research Lab to Real-world Pilot

The development of the innovation ecosystem across the stakeholders involved is perhaps the most crucial element of the initiative. The collaboration supports the journey of technologies from:

  • Research and Development
  • Validation
  • Piloting
  • Commercial roll-out

For the startups, this journey will be most relevant, since many of their technologies require industrial infrastructure before they can be scaled. For researchers and student innovators, real world problem statements that are industry-ready will enable a shift from academic to industrial innovation and solutions.

IIT Bombay Hosts Mumbai City Connect

The event was chaired by Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, and Prof. Aniruddha B. Pandit, Director of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai.

In attendance were Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, senior members of ONGC, MC²⁺, SINE, IIT Bombay’s Centre of Excellence in Oil, Gas and Energy, along with other associated member organisations. As per the official IIT Bombay event page, this program brings together students, research scholars, faculty, startups, entrepreneurs, and innovators to engage with MC²⁺ Ignite.

Startup Showcase Highlights Emerging Energy Solutions

The Mumbai City Connect spanned beyond the signing of MOUs. A startup showcase and panel discussion showcased the founders and representatives of Sagar Defence, String Bio, WellRx, AngelBot AI and VDT Pipeline Solutions. These startups focused on showcasing their innovation and the challenges of developing a mature technology for use within an industry setting.

This type of interactive session can serve startups in an early stage because technical innovations that can serve a purpose within a given industry often require validation from industry experts, mentorship, and an execution plan.

MC² Ignite Applications Open Until September 15

The Mumbai program will follow the Pune City Connect, set for September 3, 2026, as an extension of accelerator outreach to multiple cities. Specifically, applications for the first MC²⁺ Ignite cohort will remain open until September 15, 2026. This program may provide early-stage companies the opportunity to gain investment, but also access infrastructure and potential opportunities for piloting innovation.

Why the Partnership is Important to Students and Young Innovators

While MC²⁺ Ignite focuses on start-ups and energy innovation, its alignment with SINE and IIT Bombay provides important academic depth and is a magnet for young innovators and students to augment its program. Young innovators and students need to test their hypotheses on the viability of their ideas in the real world. This partnership may bridge the gap between educational institutions and industry.

These innovation ecosystems may provide broad exposure for first-time innovators via access to mentors, research, challenges, and even entrepreneurship. The core premise is simple: innovation education is more compelling when an idea develops to solve a real-world problem.

Final Thoughts

The ONGC-MC²⁺ Ignite initiative at IIT Bombay will help match an array of different components of India's fragmented innovation ecosystem, namely, industry problems, research, startups, funding, and product-market fit. MC²⁺ Ignite offers selected startups up to ₹2 crore, access to laboratories, and mentorship along the seven energy innovation themes.

However, MC²⁺ Ignite will face a true test after the MOU and accelerator application phase. The true test will be if the innovative ideas transform the laboratory and make it to a pilot phase, and if they scale beyond that. If this challenge is conquered, India may have its next big energy innovation not in a boardroom or refinery, but in a startup formed around an idea at IIT Bombay's campus research labs.
