Pune: University culture was existent in ancient India through universities like Nalanda and Takshashila where students from many counties came for education. In the early years of operations, Indian universities like Bombay University, Madras University and Calcutta University had a multi-disciplinary approach that later got established as specialized branches. Now, the time has come to adopt the multidisciplinary approach in education yet again which is an important ingredient of the new education policy, opined Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the All Indian Council for Technical education. He was speaking as Chief Guest at the first convocation ceremony of the D. Y. Patil International University, (DYPIU) Akurdi.
Dr. Sanjay Patil, Chancellor – DYPIU, Prof. Prabhat Ranjan, Vice-Chancellor – DYPIU, Tejas Patil, Trustee, D.Y. Patil Pratishthan were present on the occasion along with Dr. Madhura Jagtap, Dr. Neeraj Vyawahare, Dr. Mukesh Parashar, Dr. Madhavi Deshpande and Dr. Shashi Singh from the D. Y. Patil International University.
Total 112 students who successfully completed the graduate and post-graduate programs were conferred with the degrees at the hands of Prof Sahasrbudhe and 2 students were given the budding entrepreneurs award. These students were from the branches like MBA (Agri Business), BBA, B-Com, BA (Journalism and Mass Communication), BCA, BSC (Biotechnology DPharma).
“The New National Education Policy is holistic and has all the elements of teaching. It is a clear policy in the world with proper directions and guidance over what all needs to be done to make learning practical. Just like PM Narendra Modi says that policies can be good but what’s more important is the implementation of those policies, we have to create a strategy with the right perspectives, overcome challenges and then implement the new policy to make it useful to the society. The holistic way of looking at life is only through the right education. The flexibility of exit options and migration to other programs are the things that need to be part of our education system”, Prof. Sahasrabudhe said.
“The early education in children can be more effective if taught in their mother tongue and one should not force the children to learn the new script at the tender age. While we were exploring the ideas of using toys for imparting the Indian ethos and traditional Indian knowledge to children at an early age we came across the fact that over 80% of our toys are imported. The Indian toy industry is as big as $ 1.4 billion and we must give importance to this segment”, he added.
While guiding the student's Prof Sahasrabudhe said that students who are passionate about doing something innovative, out of the box should not get caught in a 10 to 5 working style. Instead, they should work relentlessly to achieve the desired results. He also stressed the need to have greater Industry-Academia partnerships for making the students employable after the educational programs are over.
Dr. Sanjay Patil. Chancellor of the D. Y. Patil depicted the journey of the D. Y. Patil group in his speech and said that the group which made a humble beginning in the year 1986 has grown to 172 educational institutions under 7 Universities with 3 modern facilities of medical education and is offering top class education to over 75000 students with the help of 16000 teaching and non-teaching staff members under the leadership of Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil.
Prof Prabhat Ranjan presented the progress of the last 4 years of the D. Y. Patil International University. He informed that the infrastructure at the campus is designed to facilitate fruitful interdisciplinary learning by facilitating an effective dialogue between the students and faculty members of different departments. He also informed about their successful attempt of designing multi-track B Tech programs that provide an opportunity to students to choose areas of specialization during the last two years of the program. This program model was appreciated by the AICTE by issuing a special appreciation letter.
