Maharashtra to Launch Certificate Courses for Gems & Jewellery Sector

CM Fadnavis Announces Training Initiative at MSSU to Build Skilled Workforce and Boost Exports

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced the launch of certificate courses at Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU) to train youth for careers in the fast-growing gems and jewellery industry.

Speaking at the inauguration of a jewellery exhibition at the Jio World Convention Centre, Fadnavis said the programme aims to align skill development with industry needs, creating a steady supply of trained professionals to strengthen India’s global leadership in jewellery exports. “The gems and jewellery industry already has a strong presence worldwide. By training our youth with industry-focused skills, we can ensure consistent growth and greater opportunities,” he said.

The state government is also developing a world-class Gems and Jewellery Park in Mahape, Navi Mumbai, which will provide advanced facilities for professionals and exporters, directly boosting production and exports.

Fadnavis highlighted recent reforms including simplified licensing norms, faster land acquisition, and an ‘Ease of Doing Business War Room’ at Mantralaya to monitor and implement changes on the ground.

Industry experts believe the new certificate programmes will not only bridge the gap between traditional artisans and modern requirements but also encourage young entrepreneurs to enter a sector long dominated by family-run businesses.

With Mumbai already a global hub for jewellery trade, the initiative is expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s dominance in the sector and create new employment opportunities.
