Mumbai: In a significant move to align Maharashtra’s state board education with national standards, the Maharashtra government has decided to adopt the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum for state board schools from Classes 3 to 12, starting from the academic year 2025-26. The decision, approved by the Steering Committee, aims to standardize education in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Phased Rollout of CBSE Curriculum
The transition will take place in phases, with the first phase including Classes 1, 3, 5, 8, and 11. School Education Minister Dada Bhuse confirmed this decision in a written response to the Legislative Council. While most aspects of the CBSE curriculum have been approved, discussions for a full-scale implementation are still ongoing.
According to Minister Bhuse, the objective is to equip students with a modern, flexible, and skill-oriented learning experience that enhances their critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
CBSE Curriculum Aligned with NEP 2020
The CBSE curriculum is structured around the 5+3+3+4 model proposed by NEP 2020, covering foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary stages to promote holistic learning. The shift will introduce a multidisciplinary approach, reduce rote learning, and emphasize conceptual clarity and skill-based education.
Key highlights of the new curriculum include:
-
Greater flexibility in subject selection across streams
-
Multilingual education to strengthen language proficiency
-
Continuous assessments to track student progress
-
Enhanced preparation for competitive and higher education examinations
Implementation Strategy and Teacher Training
To ensure a smooth transition, the Maharashtra government will provide teacher training and new learning materials aligned with the CBSE syllabus. Special emphasis will be placed on upskilling teachers in contemporary pedagogy to effectively deliver the new curriculum.
Regular evaluations and assessments will be conducted to monitor the effectiveness of the reforms and address any gaps in learning outcomes.
Impact on Students

-
A standardized and structured learning experience
-
Stronger foundational knowledge to excel in higher education
-
Increased opportunities in competitive exams and career choices
