Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has signed an agreement with Cambridge University Press & Assessment to introduce a digital climate education programme for students in Classes 8 and 9 in government schools. The initiative is expected to reach nearly two lakh students across the state.
The agreement was signed at Mantralaya by Hemant Wasekar, Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), and Arun Rajamani, Managing Director for South Asia at Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Several state leaders were present at the event, including School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse and Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde.
Minister of State for School Education Pankaj Bhoyar said the program, called Cambridge Climate Quest, will help students understand environmental issues and their role in solving real-world challenges. He added that the partnership is part of a larger effort to strengthen climate education in schools.
According to Bhoyar, students who perform well in the programme will receive a joint certificate from Cambridge University Press & Assessment and the Maharashtra government. He also suggested that the course be made available in Marathi so that more students can benefit from it.
Bhuse said the programme will provide students with a structured curriculum on climate change, the environment and sustainability. It will first be introduced for Classes 8 and 9, with plans to expand it to more students in the future. The School Education Department will also run awareness drives on hygiene and encourage students to take part in environmental conservation activities, especially during June.
Environment Minister Pankaja Munde said the partnership will help create awareness among young students about protecting the environment and understanding climate challenges.
Rajamani said education plays a key role in dealing with the challenges of sustainable development. He noted that the partnership with the Maharashtra government will help expand access to climate education and prepare students to become responsible and informed citizens.
The Cambridge Climate Quest programme will be delivered through Cambridge’s digital learning platform in both English and Marathi. It will cover topics such as climate science, the impact of climate change on ecosystems, renewable energy and responsible consumption. The course will follow an activity-based approach aimed at improving students’ critical thinking about environmental issues.
The program will be implemented through SCERT, District Institutes of Education and Training, and participating government schools across Maharashtra.
