INAT 2027: IUCAA Begins Admission Process For PhD and Joint M.Sc. in Physics With Astrophysics

For all students who look past the framework of the infinite number of twinkling stars and imagine more, an astounding opportunity for admission has opened. The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, has published a notification for the IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT) for 2027, through which applicants can apply for PhD research positions at IUCAA or pursue the SPPU-IUCAA Joint MSc (Physics with Astrophysics) degree.

According to the INAT 2027 official website, the examination will be used for two different academic pathways: the PhD program in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Physics at IUCAA and the SPPU-IUCAA Joint MSc program. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2026, and the written examination will be conducted on January 17, 2027.

INAT 2027 PhD Eligibility

Applicants should have completed or expect to complete their MSc/ Integrated MSc in Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Electronics, or Astronomy for PhD scholarship option. Applicants should have BE/BTech/ME/MTech in any discipline with at least 55% marks by July 2027.

IUCAA has created another chance for applicants who are continuing their higher education. Final-year BSc students, first-year MSc students, Integrated MSc students in their third or fourth year, and second- or third year of BTech/B.E. degree holders can also apply for pre-selection to the PhD program based on the mentioned conditions. A 5% relaxation is available, and applicants from SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwBD categories will be considered with 50% marks in the written examination.

SPPU-IUCAA Joint MSc Eligibility

Applications are sought from students who have completed/will complete a BSc in Physics at a minimum of the 2nd year or a BE/BTech in any branch with at least 55% marks for the Joint MSc program. Reserved-category candidates and persons with disabilities (PwBD) are eligible for a 5% relaxation.

This two-year integrated program combines theoretical and experimental physics with theoretical and observational astrophysics and computational astrophysics and includes a research project, which is carried out in the second year at IUCAA.

INAT 2027 Exam Pattern

The Written Test will cover concepts from Physics, Mathematics and Electronics/Engineering and important topics from all the three disciplines at a higher level. The Written Test will be conducted in English, last for 2 hours, and cover the following three sections.

• Section A- 16 objective-type questions with 3 marks per question and 1 mark deduction for each wrong answer.
• Section B- 8 questions for which answers will be provided in the form of integers, and no marks will be deducted for wrong answers.
• Section C- 16 objective-type questions with 3 marks per question and 1 mark deduction for each wrong answer.

Only those students who clear the Written Test will be eligible to appear for the two rounds of exams. Final selection for PhD will be done based on the performance in the Written Test and the two rounds of interviews. Selection for the Joint MSc program will be done based on the Written Test score for INAT.

How to Apply for INAT 2027

Candidates need to apply ONLY online. Candidates must register with their name and a valid email address. IUCAA will not consider any applications sent via email or by post for INAT 2027.

Applications need to reach IUCAA no later than November 30, 2026. Candidates selected for the Written Test need to carry their admit letter, photograph and a copy of of their application to the exam centre.

Please note that PhD admission through INAT is one of the multiple ways through JEST and CSIR/UGC-NET-JRF, while the INAT written test is the way to the SPPU-IUCAA Joint MSc Programme.
