IIT Bombay Convocation 2026: 3,763 Degrees Awarded, Record 620 PhD Degrees
Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has awarded 3,763 degrees to 3,442 students during the academic year 2025-26, with the institute recording its highest-ever number of doctoral degrees in a single academic year.
The institute conferred 620 PhD degrees, marking a significant milestone for its research and doctoral education programmes. The achievement came as IIT Bombay celebrated its 64th Convocation through its Autumn Convocation and Departmental Degree Award Functions.
1,713 Undergraduate and 1,430 Postgraduate Degrees Awarded
According to IIT Bombay's data, the 3,763 degrees awarded during 2025-26 comprised:
- 1,713 undergraduate degrees
- 1,430 postgraduate degrees
- 620 PhD degrees
Among the 3,442 graduating students, 791 were women and 2,651 were men.
The graduates are now set to pursue diverse opportunities in higher education, research, industry and professional careers.
3,333 Degrees Awarded During Autumn Convocation
During the two-day Autumn Convocation and departmental degree award functions, IIT Bombay conferred 3,333 degrees on 3,042 graduating students.
The degrees awarded during the session included 1,663 undergraduate degrees, 1,319 postgraduate degrees and 351 PhD degrees.
The remaining degrees were awarded through other degree-awarding functions during the academic year.
IIT Bombay Records Highest-Ever PhD Numbers
The award of 620 PhD degrees represents a major increase in doctoral output at IIT Bombay. The figure is also described as the highest number of doctoral degrees awarded by any IIT in a single academic year.
In the preceding five years, the annual number of PhD degrees awarded had generally ranged from around 300 to nearly 500.
The increase has been linked, in part, to an institutional review of long-pending research work. During the review, approximately 100 to 125 students whose research had remained incomplete for more than eight years were identified.
The latest figures underline IIT Bombay's continued emphasis on research, advanced learning and doctoral education.
Chemistry Leads in PhD Degrees
Among the 351 PhD degrees awarded during the Autumn session, the Department of Chemistry recorded the highest number with 47 doctoral degrees.
It was followed by:
- Electrical Engineering: 30 PhD degrees
- Mechanical Engineering: 27
- Biosciences and Bioengineering: 24
- Humanities and Social Sciences: 23
- Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science: 23
The distribution reflects the wide range of research disciplines represented among IIT Bombay's doctoral graduates.
