Teachers and educators may conduct part of their research while stationed at their parent institutions. However, they must spend a minimum of two years in person at HBCSE to complete coursework, registration and other mandatory requirements.
Important: This is a PhD programme in science education research, not a general education degree or a PhD in the pure sciences.

The programme offers opportunities to explore several areas of science and mathematics education. The exact PhD research topic is decided mutually in consultation with a faculty member who is willing and eligible to supervise the student.

Application Fee and Scholarship Benefits
Applicants must pay a non-refundable application fee according to the following categories:

- On-campus hostel accommodation at a nominal charge, or House Rent Allowance (HRA) in lieu of accommodation, as per government guidelines.
- An annual contingency grant of ₹60,000 for research-related expenses.
Admissions are initially made for one year. Scholarship renewals take place annually, subject to satisfactory academic progress and the academic requirements established by HBCSE/TIFR.
