Pune, September 2026: The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, is accepting applications for its Ph.D. Programme for the upcoming academic session through the IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT-2027). IUCAA PhD Admission 2027: Three Routes to Apply
Students can enter the IUCAA Ph.D. Programme through three admission routes:
1. IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT-2027)
The IUCAA National Admission Test (INAT) is conducted by IUCAA. The written examination is held in January at various cities across India, in addition to Pune.
The list of candidates shortlisted for two rounds of in-person interviews at IUCAA, Pune is expected to be published approximately 15–20 working days after the written examination.

2. Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)
Candidates can also seek admission through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).
The JEST written examination is generally conducted during February–March at more than 30 centres across India. After the JEST results are declared, eligible students are required to apply online to IUCAA.
IUCAA screening committees evaluate applications and shortlist candidates for interviews. Shortlisted candidates are informed through email, with interviews generally conducted during May or June.
3. CSIR-UGC NET for JRF in Physics
IUCAA also accepts candidates qualified for CSIR-UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Physics.
Only candidates who have qualified for JRF within the previous two years are eligible to apply through this route. Candidates who have qualified only for Lectureship are not eligible under this admission route.
Shortlisted candidates are called for interviews, generally during May or June. At the time of the interview, candidates are required to produce a letter from CSIR-UGC confirming their JRF qualification.
IUCAA PhD Eligibility Criteria
The academic year at IUCAA begins in August. Candidates who expect to complete the required degree by July can apply.
Candidates completing an M.Sc. degree in any of the following disciplines are eligible:
- Physics
- Applied Physics
- Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics
- Electronics
- Astronomy
Candidates holding or completing a B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech. degree in any branch can also apply.
The minimum qualifying marks requirement is 55%.
A 5% relaxation is applicable for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and Person with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) categories. For these candidates, the qualifying marks requirement is 50%.
Students who have already completed the relevant degree can also apply.
Final-Year and Early-Stage Students Can Also Apply
IUCAA also provides an opportunity for certain students who have not yet completed the qualifying degree to be pre-selected for research scholarship leading to a Ph.D.
