West Bengal Makes CSIR, UGC-NET Scores Compulsory for State Universities’ PhD Admission
West Bengal is set to revise and tighten the admission procedures for State Universities. As per new directives, the West Bengal State Universities will conduct PhD admissions as per the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), and UGC-NET (National Eligibility Test), making both CSIR and UGC-NET mandatory for admission to PhD programs. This is a clearly marked shift in the PhD admission policies in West Bengal State Universities. Earlier, several State Universities conducted their own entrance examinations for PhD programs. This order will encourage those Universities to reinforce national admission policies and standards.

UGC-NET and CSIR-UGC-NET scores will be the primary eligibility criteria for admission to the PhD programs for all West Bengal State Universities. As per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, admission to PhD programs across the country should be governed by national-level eligibility tests. Within this framework, the UGC-NET is the only examination that stipulates the eligibility for the award of Junior Research Fellowship and the Assistant Professorship, as well as the eligibility to pursue a PhD.
