Kolkata, August 11, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that biographies and life stories of legendary freedom fighters will be included in the state’s curriculum from the primary school level to universities. The announcement was made while addressing a programme marking Khudiram Bose Atmabalidan Divas in Keshpur, West Midnapore.
Adhikari said the initiative aims to ensure that students learn about the sacrifices and contributions of freedom fighters in greater detail. Referring specifically to Khudiram Bose, he said the revolutionary’s contribution should not remain limited to a few lines in textbooks and should instead be taught across educational levels. He also announced that Khudiram Bose Atmabalidan Divas will be observed every year in his memory.
The Chief Minister said the new government wants students to understand the sacrifices made during India’s freedom movement and linked the initiative to promoting patriotism and statesmanship. The government is also taking steps to renovate Khudiram Bose’s ancestral house, according to the announcement.
The proposed curriculum change comes amid a broader review of West Bengal’s school education system. School Education Minister Dipak Burman said earlier this month that existing textbooks will be retained and reviewed in the 2027 academic year, while a major restructuring of the state’s education system and curriculum is planned from the 2028 academic session. The inclusion of freedom fighters’ biographies is expected to form part of this wider curriculum revision.
