What makes a research facility truly impactful in today’s fast evolving scientific landscape? At JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research Mysuru, the University Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre is offering a compelling answer by bringing advanced technologies closer to real world clinical applications.
The University Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre at JSS AHER Mysuru Karnataka India is a state of the art facility established to support cutting edge research across interdisciplinary domains. The centre houses a comprehensive suite of advanced instrumentation, including a 3 laser flow cytometry analyzer, a 5 laser flow cytometry sorter with 4 way sorting capability, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, High Resolution Mass Spectrometry, confocal microscopy, Next Generation Sequencing, and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, along with fully equipped cell culture facilities.
A key strength of USIC lies in its close integration with JSS Hospital, providing access to a diverse range of patient samples, including those from haematological malignancies. This unique advantage enables seamless translation of laboratory findings into clinically relevant outcomes.
The establishment of the facility has been supported by funding from the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Science and Technology, along with institutional support from JSS AHER. The primary objective of USIC is to empower researchers, students, clinicians, and scientists to address fundamental questions in science and medicine, ultimately facilitating the translation of research from bench to bedside.
For instance, the flow cytometry platforms are extensively used to study immune cell responses to treatment. The facility also processes clinical samples, particularly from haematological malignancies such as multiple myeloma and lymphoma, to analyse immune cell populations. These insights contribute to supporting clinicians in making informed treatment decisions.
The facility is managed by a team of highly qualified technical officers with strong industrial experience, supported by a translational scientist and Assistant Professor Dr Komal Kumar Javarappa, who brings extensive international expertise. Dr Javarappa has worked at leading global institutions, including the National University of Singapore, RigsHospitalet Denmark, University of Helsinki, and Linkoping University. He has leveraged this international experience to strengthen the scientific ecosystem in India and actively contributes through workshops and hands on training programs in advanced instrumentation.
The USIC facility is headed by the Dean of Research Dr Prashant M Vishwanath, a physician scientist, along with the leadership team of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research.
USIC is widely utilized by undergraduate and postgraduate students for dissertations, PhD scholars for advanced research, and professionals from medical, dental, and allied health sciences. The centre also offers internship programs and regularly conducts workshops on advanced instrumentation.
To ensure transparency and accessibility, all instrumentation at USIC can be booked through the Indian Science Technology and Engineering Facilities Map ISTEM portal ISTEM.gov.in, enabling efficient scheduling and utilization on an hourly basis.
USIC at JSS AHER stands as one of the leading centralized instrumentation facilities in India, bringing together a wide array of high end technologies under one roof. By offering access at nominal cost, the centre plays a vital role in advancing research and fostering innovation across disciplines.
