Ministry of Education urges UPI adoption in schools | Digital transformation in education | Ease of Schooling

The Ministry of Education has urged States, UTs, and educational bodies like CBSE, NCERT, and KVS to adopt UPI and other digital payment systems in schools. New Delhi | In a major step toward promoting Ease of Schooling and Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Education has encouraged the inclusion of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) systems across schools in India for fee collection and other financial transactions. The move aims to simplify administrative processes, enhance transparency, and bring education under the ambit of India’s digital revolution.

MoE Issues Advisory to States and Educational Bodies

In a letter issued to all States, Union Territories (UTs), and educational bodies under its jurisdiction, the Department of School Education and Literacy has urged institutions to integrate UPI and other secure digital payment modes for transactions such as admission fees, examination fees, and other charges.

The directive also extends to autonomous organizations under the Ministry — including CBSE, NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) — asking them to lead the transition toward fully digital financial systems.

Convenience and Transparency for Parents and Students

The Ministry highlighted that the shift from cash-based to digital payments will bring significant advantages for parents, students, and school administrations alike.

“Digital payment options such as UPI will ensure convenience, transparency, and accessibility — allowing parents to make school payments from home without the need to visit campuses,” the letter noted.

By adopting secure and transparent payment platforms like UPI, mobile wallets, and net banking, schools can eliminate manual errors, improve record-keeping, and reduce administrative overhead.

Aligning with India’s Digital Transformation Goals

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s larger vision of Digital Transformation and Ease of Living, ensuring that educational institutions also benefit from the ongoing fintech revolution.

Encouraging all States and UTs to follow suit, the Ministry emphasized that digital payments in schools are a key step toward building a financially literate and digitally empowered generation.

The Ministry stated that such reforms will not only simplify everyday school operations but also contribute to the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047” — a digitally advanced, inclusive, and citizen-centric India.

Towards a Digitally Empowered Education System

By promoting digital fee payments, the Ministry aims to make schooling more efficient, transparent, and inclusive. The initiative marks another milestone in India’s journey toward building a modern, technology-driven education ecosystem that benefits both administrators and learners.
