UP Government Revises TGT, PGT Recruitment Rules

Biology Reinstated for TGT; Stricter Subject-Specific Eligibility for PGT

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has revised the qualification criteria for the recruitment of Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) and Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) in aided secondary schools, introducing subject-specific requirements to enhance teacher quality.

Biology Restored in TGT Recruitment

  • In a major relief for biology graduates, the state has reinstated biology as a subject for TGT recruitment across 4,512 aided secondary schools.
  • Candidates with a graduation degree in biological sciences (zoology or botany) and a B.Ed are now eligible to apply.
  • This change reopens opportunities for aspirants who were previously excluded.
  • The revised structure outlines subject-specific qualification rules for 26 subjects at the current level and 42 subjects at the previous level for TGT recruitment.

Stricter Criteria for PGT Posts

The government has tightened eligibility norms for certain PGT subjects:

  • PGT Geography: Only candidates with a master’s degree in geography can apply.
  • PGT Civics: Only candidates with a postgraduate degree in political science are eligible.
  • No other major changes have been introduced for other PGT subjects, where existing rules remain in effect.

Aim: Transparency and Quality Improvement

  • According to the order issued by Special Secretary Krishna Kumar Gupta, the amendments were approved by the Governor and communicated to the Director of Education Secondary and the Chairman of the Secondary Education Council.
  • At the high school level, science and biology will now be treated as separate teaching categories with distinct qualification requirements.
  • The revised rules, notified on September 9, supersede the earlier guidelines dated April 22.

Officials say the updated framework will bring clarity, transparency, and subject expertise to the recruitment process.
