UP Farmers to Earn from Soil Carbon: IIT Roorkee Launches Model

IIT Roorkee and the Government of Uttar Pradesh unveil India’s first large-scale farmer carbon credit model using advanced DMRV systems. The initiative converts soil carbon gains into verified carbon credits, generating direct income for farmers while supporting India’s Net-Zero 2070 goals.

IIT Roorkee & Government of Uttar Pradesh Launch India’s First Large-Scale Farmer Carbon Credit Model — Turning Soil into Income

Roorkee, India – December 09, 2025: In a landmark step toward climate-smart agriculture, IIT Roorkee, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, has launched India’s first large-scale, government–academia carbon credit model designed to generate direct income for farmers through scientifically verified soil carbon improvement.

This pioneering initiative introduces a Digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (DMRV) system aligned with global carbon market standards. The model links improved soil practices—such as minimum tillage, cover cropping, residue management, agroforestry, and bio-fertiliser enhancement—to measurable soil carbon gains and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. These verified improvements will be converted into high-quality carbon credits and sold to national and international buyers, with earnings transferred straight to farmers’ bank accounts. The programme’s core message captures its spirit: सीधी कमाई, स्थानीय फायदा (direct income, local benefit).

Saharanpur Division to Lead India’s Carbon-Farming Revolution

The rollout will begin in the Saharanpur Division, identified as a high-potential region capable of generating significant annual carbon credits. IIT Roorkee will further facilitate connections between farmers, carbon markets, and global climate investors, offering industries transparently measured, scientifically validated credits to meet Net Zero targets while supporting regenerative agriculture.

Voices from Leadership

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, stated:
“This initiative gives farmers a meaningful stake in climate action by ensuring their sustainable practices translate into real income. By combining scientific rigour with ground-level execution, we aim to create new economic opportunities while enhancing farmer resilience.”

Prof. A.S. Maurya, Principal Investigator, IIT Roorkee, added:
“Every tonne of carbon stored in the soil will be measured, verified, and monetised. This programme is not only about carbon credits but about restoring soil health, reducing input costs, and generating new income streams for millions.”

Mr. Ravinder, Principal Secretary (Agriculture), Government of Uttar Pradesh, said:
“The state government welcomes IIT Roorkee’s leadership. This transformative partnership ensures farmers benefit directly from sustainable practices while contributing to India’s climate commitments.”

Large-scale implementation across Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to begin soon, marking a significant step in India’s journey toward Net-Zero 2070, global climate goals, and farmer prosperity.
