Bhopal - People’s University has raised concerns over the increasing impact of excessive online gaming on students’ mental well-being and academic success. In a recent blog post titled “Digital Well-Being of Students: Why Monitoring Online Games Is Important Today,” the university underscored how unsupervised smartphone and gaming usage can negatively influence children’s behavior, emotional stability, and overall development.
The university pointed out that modern online games are designed to keep players engaged for long hours through reward systems, levels, and social interaction features. Such prolonged exposure may lead to gaming addiction, sleep deprivation, reduced academic focus, mood swings, exposure to inappropriate content, and even financial losses through in-app purchases. It also referenced incidents such as the Ghaziabad tragedy and past cases like the Blue Whale Challenge and PUBG addiction to illustrate the risks associated with unmonitored digital activities.
Highlighting preventive measures, People’s University advised parents to actively monitor browsing history, app usage, and gaming time. The institution recommended setting screen-time limits, enabling parental control software, disabling in-app purchases, and encouraging open communication with children about their online interactions. Promoting offline activities such as sports, reading, and family time was also suggested to maintain a healthy digital balance.
Reinforcing its commitment to responsible digital education, People’s University emphasized that digital safety is as important as classroom learning. The university called upon parents, teachers, and guardians to remain vigilant and work together to create a secure digital environment where children can benefit from technology while staying protected from potential online risks.
