New Delhi - The Union MInister of Power, Manohar Lal, inaugurated the Centre of Excellence (COE) for Regulatory Affairs in the Power Sector at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on January 19, 2026.
The Centre has been jointly established by IIT Delhi , the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and Grid Controller of India Ltd (Grid India). It aims to act as a national hub for regulatory research, capacity building, advisory, support and knowledge sharing in the power sector.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Power Minister said that as India moves towards clean energy, competitive power markets and consumer-focused to reforms, strong regulation backed by research and data is very important. He added that the new Centre will support informed and forward-looking regulation in the country. The Centre will focus on key areas such as power market design, grid operations, energy transition challenges, digitalisation, decarbonisation, energy storage, demand response and green hydrogen. It will also help train regulators and power sectors professional through structured programs and research-based inputs.
IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee said the partnership will help create new knowledge and analysis to make India's electricity sector sustainable, affordable and future ready. Officials from CERC and Grid India also highlighted that the center will support evidence-based policymaking and align regulatory frameworks with the real-world grid operations.
The collaboration between IIT Delhi, CERC and Grid India is expected to play a key role in building a strong, adaptive and future ready regulatory framework for India's power sector.
