Union Government Approves 10,023 Additional Medical Seats Under Central Schemes
New Delhil. : In a significant step toward strengthening India’s medical education infrastructure, the Union Government has sanctioned 10,023 additional medical seats in government medical colleges under Centrally Sponsored Schemes. The expansion will be implemented over four financial years, from 2025–26 to 2028–29, to address the growing demand for trained healthcare professionals.
According to data shared by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has recorded a sharp rise in medical education capacity in recent years. Between the academic years 2020–21 and 2025–26, the number of undergraduate MBBS seats increased by 48,563, while postgraduate medical seats rose by 29,080, significantly widening access to medical training within the country.
Year-wise additions under the government-supported expansion show steady growth. Medical seats added during this period include 4,983 seats in 2020–21, 4,705 in 2021–22, 2,874 in 2022–23, 4,713 in 2023–24, 4,186 in 2024–25, and a notable rise to 7,619 seats in 2025–26.
As the apex regulatory authority for medical education, the NMC has also introduced multiple regulatory frameworks to ensure quality and uniform standards across institutions. These include the Minimum Standards Requirement, Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations 2023, and the Competency-Based Medical Education Curriculum Guidelines 2024. Together, these measures aim to improve teaching quality, infrastructure, and clinical training nationwide.

The expanded intake under government schemes is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s healthcare workforce, improving access to medical education, and supporting the country’s long-term public health goals.
