UGC Calls on Universities to Strengthen Women Empowerment Initiatives Under NEP 2020

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive urging all universities and colleges to conduct programmes, seminars, and conferences focusing on gender sensitization, women empowerment, and leadership development in alignment with NEP 2020.

New Delhi: In a significant move aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to Vice Chancellors of all universities and Principals of colleges across India, urging them to organize targeted programmes to empower women in higher education.

The NEP 2020 envisions a multidisciplinary, inclusive, and learner-centric education system, with strong emphasis on quality enhancement, gender inclusion, and equitable access. Recognizing the vital role of women in India's socio-economic progress, the UGC stressed that increasing women’s participation in higher education is both a matter of equality and a strategic national priority.

As part of the initiative, educational institutions have been encouraged to hold workshops, seminars, training programmes, and conferences for girl students and women employees. These events will focus on gender sensitization, leadership development, awareness on women’s rights, entrepreneurship, and innovation opportunities.

The UGC has also recommended inviting members of the National Commission for Women, the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women, and retired senior government officials to participate and guide these programmes, ensuring insights from experienced policymakers and experts.

With this directive, the UGC aims to foster an accessible, supportive, and empowering ecosystem for women in higher education—one that helps them contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
