New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UCG) has asked all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to award degrees to all students within 180 days from the date of declaration of results.

The date/s of the degree award shall be within 180 days from the date by which the students are expected to qualify and become eligible for the same," the official notice said. The decision was taken by the Commission after receiving a large number of complaints/RTIs/queries from students enrolled in various programs of study regarding delay in award of degrees by HEIs of higher education institutions.

As soon as the complaint regarding this subject was received by the UGC, they immediately took the issue seriously and decided that the higher education institutions should ensure compliance with the rules of the commission and award degrees to all successful candidates within the stipulated time frame.

The commission has also urged the HEI to issue provisional degrees along with final year transcripts to the students. In case of violation by the Universities to comply with the UGC norms on award of degrees, the Commission shall be bound to take punitive action as notified in Regulation 9 of the UGC (Readressal of Grievances) Regulations 2012.
