UGC Flags 32 Fake Universities Across Multiple States

The University Grants Commission has identified several unauthorised institutions in India. Check the official list of states involved and institutions.

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released an updated list of 32 institutions operating illegally as “fake universities” across India. These institutions are not recognised under the UGC Act, 1956 and therefore do not have the authority to award valid degrees. The announcement comes amid ongoing admission activity for the upcoming academic session.

According to the UGC, these institutions are neither established by an Act of Parliament or a State Legislature nor declared as deemed universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act. As a result, degrees, diplomas or any certificates issued by them are not considered valid for higher education, government jobs or competitive examinations.

The fake universities identified by the UGC are spread across 12 states and Union Territories. These include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Puducherry. While Delhi accounts for the highest number of such institutions on the list, followed by Uttar Pradesh and other states.

The UGC has explicitly stated that these institutions do not exist as a legally recognised university. The regulator has reiterated that several such entities continue to operate under misleading names that resemble recognised universities. To help students and parents verify institutional status as well as University recognition before taking admission, especially during peak admission periods to avoid enrolling in unauthorised institutions and risking invalid academic qualifications, the UGC has made the complete and updated list of fake universities publicly available, listed along with their location and status.

The list can be accessed at their official website.
