UGC Urges Higher Education Institutions to Celebrate National Sports Day 2026 From August 28 to 30

New Delhi : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Institutions of National Importance (INIs) to participate in the National Sports Day (NSD) 2026 celebrations scheduled to be held from August 28 to 30, 2026.

The campaign is being organised under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”.

The UGC received a communication from the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, forwarding a request from the Director General, Sports Authority of India (SAI) regarding the nationwide National Sports Day campaign.

UGC Asks HEIs to Follow SAI Guidelines

Through the communication, the UGC has requested universities, colleges and other eligible higher education institutions to follow the guidelines issued by the Sports Authority of India for the National Sports Day celebrations.

The Commission has also encouraged institutions to make efforts to ensure wide participation and help make the campaign a success across higher education campuses nationwide.

National Sports Day 2026 Theme

The 2026 campaign will be conducted under the theme:

“Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”

The initiative aims to encourage greater participation in sports and promote awareness about the importance of physical activity among students and the wider community.

Higher education institutions have been encouraged to actively participate in the campaign and organise activities in accordance with the guidelines issued by SAI.

Nationwide Participation Encouraged

The UGC's communication is intended to facilitate coordinated participation by higher education institutions across the country.

Universities and institutions are expected to take appropriate steps to observe National Sports Day between August 28 and August 30, while following the campaign framework and instructions communicated by the Sports Authority of India.

The initiative is expected to provide students with greater opportunities to engage with sports and contribute to the broader promotion of a sporting culture in educational institutions.
