UGC Pushes AI Integration in Liberal Arts Education Through SWAYAM, NCrF and Skill Initiatives
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is introducing AI and digitally transactive learning and teaching and skills-based education in all higher education programs, including those in Liberal Arts. Recent communication from the Ministry of Education outlines pilot projects encompassing SWAYAM, the National Credit Framework (NCrF), AI pre-readiness programs, and multidisciplinary higher education.
The approach is a testament to the spirit of the National Education Policy 2020 in designing flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-based higher education. Traditionally, the focus has been to treat technology as a part of a separate academic discipline to be integrated at an advanced level. The focus has now moved to treating technology in conjunction with critical thinking, digitalized learning, and interdisciplinary understanding.
AI becomes Part of Liberal Arts Education
By their nature, Liberal Arts education programs bring together multiple dimensions of the humanities, social sciences, and a spectrum of other disciplines. The inclusion of AI in education programs provides students with the opportunity to develop digital skills along with analytical and communication skills.
As depicted in the Ministry's infographic, one program supporting the AI preparedness effort is the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) initiative. SOAR seeks to create among workers basic-level AI understanding and skills through a structured learning program. The program, which is offered virtually, provides a teaching and a learning component and is designed to be flexible, making it accessible through digital learning.
For Liberal Arts students, this initiative enables them to merge digital skills with existing proficiencies in communication, research, critique of social structures, and analysis.
SWAYAM Enhances Online Learning Options
SWAYAM has become an integral component of India's digitally enabled education system at higher education levels. Through this platform, students can enroll in online courses and design an academic portfolio that suits their needs.
Recent communications from the Ministry state that SWAYAM offers 140-plus online courses related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), and more than 50 lakh students have enrolled in these.The policy environment also allows students to use appropriate SWAYAM courses to fulfill their academic needs.
Within the framework of UGC online courses, students are allowed to complete up to 40% of the total credits required for a course by enrolling in SWAYAM-related MOOCs. This supports students in having the flexibility to develop skills in areas that are beyond their traditional education.
Skills and Degrees Aligned
Another important change is the introduction of the National Credit Framework (NCrF). NCrF provides a mechanism for the recognition and accumulation of prior learning in multiple education and training systems, including vocational, skills, and experiential learning systems. Within the UGC's framework of skill-based education, 50% of the total credits required for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree can be fulfilled through appropriate skill-based courses or awards.
For the Liberal Arts, this makes the education system considerably flexible. Students can combine their academic studies with other areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, or other allied areas. The flexibility will be subject to the academic policies of the institution.
PM USHA and MERU Strengthen Multidisciplinary Education
There is an association between AI and skills-focused measures and broader reformation of the system of higher education. The Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM USHA) covers improvements in state higher education institutions, regarding provisions of access, equity, quality, and multidisciplinary learning. Under PM USHA, the Multi-Disciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU) component allows for the establishment of 35 multidisciplinary education and research universities (each granted Rs. 100 crore). The component supports multidisciplinary education and research, digital learning, and vocational education and training in 21st-century skills.
This is a significant development in the field of Liberal Arts, as multidisciplinary education involves the ability to traverse disciplinary divides.
