UDISE Plus 2025–26 Report, Teacher Strength Crosses 1.02 Crore in India

According to the UDISE+ 2025-26 report from the Ministry of Education, there are now 1.02 crore teachers in India, an 8.3% increase from 2022-23. Reported improvements include teacher availability, student–teacher ratios, and the progress of the nation to bolster school education as per the provisions in NEP 2020.

India adds 800,000 teachers in 4 years: The UDISE+ 2025–26.

India's school workforce has expanded, according to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2025–26 report recently published by the Ministry of Education. In the last four school years, the number of school teachers crossed 1.02 crore (102.7 lakh) in 2025–26. In the last report, the number of teachers was 94.8 lakh in the school year 2022–23, and in the subsequent school years, 2023–24, 2024–25, and 2025–26, the number of teachers was 98.1 lakh, 101.2 lakh, and 102.7 lakh, respectively.

Teacher Availability Continues to Get Better

According to the Ministry of Education, the availability of teachers will improve the quality of education, and the teaching workforce will also help improve the teaching-learning process. The UDISE+ report states that a stronger teaching workforce will help improve and engage learners in the classroom and help improve outcomes of the teaching-learning process, as per the NEP 2020.

Teacher Strength in India in the Last Four Years Teacher Strength for the Years 2022–23 to 2025–26.

  • 2022–23: 94.8 lakh
  • 2023–24: 98.1 lakh
  • 2024–25: 101.2 lakh
  • 2025–26: 102.7 lakh

This shows that in the last four academic years, nearly 800,000 teachers were added.

Why is it important to increase teacher numbers?

Learning in the classroom depends on the availability of teachers. Schools with a sufficient number of teachers provide better academic support, better control of student behavior in the classroom, and better individual student support.

The latest UDISE+ findings also show improvements in pupil-teacher ratios across multiple phases of school education, remaining better than the pupil-teacher ratio benchmark recommended under NEP 2020. Staff availability is even more advantageous for rural and underserved areas, which face teacher shortages.

Addressing Goals of NEP 2020

Increasing the number of teachers is closely aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which focuses on the quality of teaching, fairness in access to education, and positive changes in the teaching/learning process.

The Ministry has stated that an increase in the teaching workforce is a major step towards:

  • Better pupil-teacher ratios.
  • Better quality of teaching in the classroom.
  • Better balance in teaching/learning resources across different regions of the country.
  • Better access to education for all people in the country.
  • Better consistency in the application of the reforms of NEP 2020.

UDISE+ Continues to Direct Educational Policy

In India, UDISE+ remains the most important resource for tracking all data pertinent to school education. It provides data for the whole country, capturing information for all schools and school enrollments as well as all school teachers and educational infrastructures. The data helps the policymakers utilize the yearly report to see how far the country's education system has come, and how far it has left.

The upcoming 2025-26 UDISE+ report against other indicators shows progress on other fronts of school education, like declining school dropout rates and the sustained assessment of the quality of education in all states / Union Territories.

Conclusion

Growth in the teaching workforce indicates a continued commitment to investing in the school education system and strengthening the teaching workforce. While there is no guarantee on learning, improvement in the workforce provides the scaffolding to have better and stronger classrooms, to support teaching and learning, to have better and stronger teaching and learning, and to implement educational reforms.

With the continued implementation and reforms brought on by the NEP 2020 on school education, the 2025-26 UDISE+ report shows a positive trend in the capacity of the education system to serve millions of learners, to do so in a better and more effective.
