WITS Announces Research Office Postdoctoral Fellowship for Early Career Scholars

The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) has invited applications for its Research Office Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme, aimed at early-career researchers who have completed their PhD within the last five years. The fellowship provides comprehensive financial and research support for a 24-month period and is tenable in Johannesburg, South Africa. Interested and eligible candidates must submit their applications through the official online portal on or before 7 March 2026. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Johannesburg - The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, has opened applications for its prestigious Research Office Postdoctoral Fellowship, designed to support emerging scholars in advancing high-quality, impactful research. The programme offers an enabling academic environment for postdoctoral researchers to deepen their expertise, expand their publication record, and collaborate with leading academics across disciplines at WITS.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree awarded within the last five years from a SAQA-accredited institution and should be able to reside in Johannesburg for the full duration of the fellowship. Fellows are required to be based at WITS, actively participate in academic life on campus, and demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly excellence, collaboration, and the university’s core values.

As part of the application process, candidates must prepare a comprehensive research proposal in consultation with an identified academic host at WITS. The proposal should include a background to the study (approximately 1,000 words), a clear rationale (around 250 words), defined aims and objectives (about 300 words), a detailed research methodology (approximately 1,000 words), and a Gantt chart outlining research activities and milestones across the 24-month period. Applications must be submitted through the official online application system provided by the university.

The fellowship is awarded for a fixed term of 24 months and includes a competitive financial package comprising an annual stipend of R320,000, a cost-of-living top-up of R20,000 per annum, and a research cost allowance of R10,000 per annum, subject to approval. This support structure is designed to ensure fellows can maintain a high standard of living while undertaking ambitious and socially relevant research projects.
