Agartala– In response to recent student protests over admission issues, Tripura’s Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman on Sunday assured that all students who have passed the Class 12 state board examination will be admitted to government degree colleges.
The assurance comes in the wake of a controversy at Ramthakur Degree College, where a professor was suspended for allegedly forging the principal’s signature to admit over 100 students illegally. The incident triggered student unrest over limited seats and admission irregularities.
“There are more than 33,000 seats available across government colleges in the state, and 24,000 students have cleared the higher secondary exams this year,” said Barman. “All eligible students will be admitted, though not necessarily in the subject or college of their choice,” he added. The minister has also directed college principals in Agartala to create additional seats wherever possible to accommodate students.
Commenting on the situation at Ramthakur College, Barman clarified that the department is not responsible for events that occurred outside the campus.
Meanwhile, Principal Papri Das Sengupta of Ramthakur College stated that the institution has already exceeded its intake capacity. “Admissions were conducted strictly on merit through an online portal, and we cannot accommodate more students,” she said.
