Top engineering colleges: IIT Kharagpur’s global, domestic ranking in last 5 years

The institute was declared as an institute of national importance on September 15, 1956 after the Parliament passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act.

In the last 3 years, it has been ranked fifth in the research category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), published by the ‘Ministry of Education’ of government of India

Along with five other IITs ( IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IIT Bombay), IIT Kharagpur had boycotted THE World University Rankings.
 
IIT Kharagpur is the first Indian Institute of Technology, it was established in May 1950. “Initially the IIT started functioning from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon shifted to Hijli in September 1950. The present name ‘Indian Institute of Technology’ was adopted before the formal inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,” as per the official website.
