TNPSC Exams 2026 Schedule, Dates, Eligibility and Vacancies

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission has published the Annual Planner 2026, detailing the exam dates for Group 1, 2, 2A, 4, and Combined Technical Services. With more than 6,000 vacancies expected, this cycle gives candidates a unique opportunity to prepare early.

Annual Package Announced with Publication of the year 2026 TNPSC Annual Planner

It looks like the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) wants to be an early mover again. On 3 December 2025, TNPSC published its Annual Planner 2026. This document outlines the expected notification and scheduling dates for all major recruitment exams conducted by the TNPSC throughout the year. For the many aspirants of Tamil Nadu government jobs, the TNPSC Annual Planner is not just a calendar; it marks the start of the year. The planner includes the Combined Civil Services Group 1, Group 2 and 2A, Group 4, and the Combined Technical Services (CTS) exams.

Altogether, the expected postings for these exams will range from 6,000 to 8,000 vacancies across various state government departments. The TNPSC stated that the dates are not finalised and will be subject to change. Candidates are expected to check tnpsc.gov.in regularly. The year starts with the CTS exam. The TNPSC notification dated 20 May 2026 published 461 non-interview government posts for those with a technical or diploma qualification.

Computer-based applications will be accepted from 27 May 2026 to 25 June 2026, and the exam is scheduled for 8 August 2026. For many, the CTS exam will be the first major government exam of the year, and it is prudent for aspiring engineering/diploma/polytechnic candidates to submit an application before the window closes.

Group 1 to Group 4: Overview of Exam Dates, Vacancies, & Eligibility

The TNPSC Group 1 exam is the most prestigious. Group 1 recruits for the positions of Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and District Registrar. The Group 1 notification is to be released on 23/06/2026, the Preliminary Exam is to be held on 06/09/2026, and the vacancies announced for this cycle are 72 to 78. Any degree and age between 21 and 34 (age relaxation for reserved categories) are the eligibility criteria for Group 1. There are three stages in the selection process: the Prelims, the Mains, and an Interview, which is worth 100 marks.

Group 2 and Group 2A follow slightly different processes. The notification is expected to be released on 11/08/2026, and the exam is to be held on 25/10/2026. Group 2 recruits for the positions of Assistant Inspector and Sub-Registrar, and Group 2A for positions such as Junior Employment Officer and Personal Clerk, which are non-interview posts. The eligibility criteria for both posts are being a graduate aged between 18 and 40 years. Proficiency in Tamil at the SSLC level is also mandatory.

Group 4 closes the year on the largest scale. The revised vacancies are 5,307, with the notification to be released on 06/10/2026, and the exam to be held on 20/12/2026. The posts are Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Typist, and Steno Typist. The vacancies make this the most popular and accessible exam for fresh graduates seeking entry into the Public Services.

How Students Can Use This Schedule to Develop an Effective Preparation Strategy

Trying to time your exam with the right groups is a battle in itself. With Group 1 coming in September, Group 2 in October, and Group 4 in December, a well-structured plan from June onwards allows a disciplined and diligent candidate to sit for multiple exams in a single cycle. Get your prep started with the syllabus. The TNPSC has updated the syllabi for its posts on its official page at tnpsc.gov.in. It’s important to remember these syllabi are subject to change, so candidates should download the updated version each time after a new notification, and never before.

Current affairs should be looked over every day from the very first month. 12 months of news cannot be summed up in a last-minute "cram". Core exam prep from TNPSC history and the other basic subjects like geography, polity, and science will remain the same, no matter which exam group you're prepping for.

Tamil is a non-negotiable section. Every TNPSC exam contains a qualifying section, and underestimating it has cost numerous well-prepared candidates their results. Be sure to practice old exam papers and look for the answer key when it becomes available.

Finally, treat your preparation as a living document. Check tnpsc.gov.in every month. Competitors who don't know the rules of engagement or who miss the deadlines cost themselves a year in the job market.
