TNEA Counselling 2026: Round 1 Choice Filling Begins
The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) has opened Round 1 choice filling for TNEA Counselling 2026. This gives Tamil Nadu’s top-ranked engineering aspirants a narrow three-day window to select their engineering branch and college choices. After this period, Round 1 of the TNEA Counselling for 2026 will close.
Tamil Nadu’s Board 12 students and the students who made the TNEA merit list will have to face stiff competition for engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. This is especially true for the popular engineering colleges.
Who gets to fill in the choice for Round 1?
Only the candidates who have made the general list with a rank between 1 and 37,976 are eligible to fill in preferences for Round 1. This translates to scoring between 200 and 171.333 (approx.) on the merit list based on the Board score in the reduced 200-point score of the Board’s Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Choice filling started on July 20 and will close on July 22. Therefore, candidates have about 2.5 days to conduct the choice-filling process. After July 22, 2026, the system will automatically fill preferences for choice filling in the order of selection saved last.
What Happens After Choices Are Locked
Once the choice-filling window closes, Anna University assigns seats based on rank. Each student is assigned the highest preferred choice available. The tentative Round 1 seat allotment is expected on July 24. Candidates will receive a brief period in which to accept the allotted seat or decide not to accept the seat and participate in the higher-order preference rounds.
A few days later, there will be a provisional allotment order. Candidates who have been allotted a seat will have to go to their allotted college to complete the admission process. Why The Choice List Actually Matters
TNEA does not have its own entrance examination. TNEA seats are assigned based on the Class 12 cut-off marks and the preferences candidates provide during the choice-filling process. When candidates provide few choices and/or rank many choices poorly, they risk not being assigned a seat even with a good rank.
Counselling experts recommend that candidates provide all combinations of College and Branch that the choice-filling portal allows, with a strategically genuine preference order. This allows candidates a statistically better chance to be allotted a seat after the first round, rather than having to wait for subsequent admission rounds.
Round 1 and What’s Next?
The TNEA 2026 Counseling schedule consists of three main rounds and an earlier reservation round covering the Government School 7.5% quota, which took place from July 13 to 17. The strongest rank and most sought-after branches are covered in Round 1. Participants may forgo an allotment and choose to pursue a better allotment in subsequent rounds. Following the closure of Round 1, the opening of Round 2 will occur within a short period of time.
