Telangana Government Announces 85% Reservation for Local Students in PG Medical and Dental Courses in Private Colleges
Hyderabad, November 4, 2025: In a landmark decision aimed at empowering local medical graduates and strengthening the state’s healthcare ecosystem, the Telangana government has approved 85% reservation for local students in postgraduate (PG) medical and dental seats under the management quota in private colleges.
The policy, approved by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy following a proposal from Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, marks a major reform in Telangana’s medical education system. The decision ensures that Telangana MBBS graduates get fairer access to PG education opportunities that were previously dominated by students from other states.
Government Order to Formalize New Quota Policy
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed the Health Secretary to issue a Government Order (GO) to formalize the 85% local reservation policy.
According to official estimates, around 318 PG medical seats and 70 dental seats in private colleges will now be reserved for students from Telangana.
Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha said,
“This decision will greatly benefit thousands of Telangana’s MBBS graduates. With limited PG seats and intense competition, this move ensures that our students get the opportunity to continue their medical education within the state.”
Boost to Healthcare and Specialist Availability
Officials highlighted that until now, management quota seats were filled under the All India Quota (AIQ), often leading to a majority of seats being taken by out-of-state candidates. The new policy aims to reverse that trend and retain medical talent within Telangana.
The Health Minister added that the decision would increase the number of specialist doctors in the state’s hospitals and healthcare centers.
“By giving preference to local students, we are not only promoting fairness but also ensuring better medical services for the people of Telangana,” Rajanarsimha wrote on social media.
Promoting Local Talent and Strengthening Public Health
The Telangana government views this reform as part of its broader vision to build a self-reliant healthcare system. By giving local graduates priority in PG medical admissions, the state aims to develop a sustainable pool of qualified doctors who are familiar with regional health challenges and committed to serving their communities.
Officials believe that this initiative will address both educational inequality and the shortage of medical specialists, ensuring that public hospitals and rural areas have greater access to expert care.
The move has been widely praised across academic, medical, and public health circles, positioning Telangana as a frontrunner in promoting equitable medical education and healthcare excellence.
