Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Pursues Global Expansion in Accordance with NEP

TISS plans to expand its pursuits by collaborating with foreign institutes with current talks with the Bhutanese Government and the GCC.

Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has unveiled its ambitious endeavour to extend its academic influence internationally and forge strategic partnerships with esteemed foreign institutions. The institute's decision comes soon after the recent announcement made by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, concerning the establishment of an IIT campus in Tanzania.

Pro Vice Chancellor of TISS, Bino Paul, revealed that their team had recently conducted productive discussions with the Bhutanese government. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations have demonstrated a keen interest in hosting a TISS campus within their territories. This proactive global approach by the institute aligns harmoniously with the principles outlined in the New Education Policy (NEP), emphasising the introduction of pioneering courses in the realm of social sciences.

As a testament to its international initiatives, TISS has recently concluded an agreement with Monash University in Australia and Queen Mary University in London, focusing on a students' exchange program. These strategic alliances represent vital components of TISS's broader vision to cater to the demands of NEP by offering innovative courses in social sciences. Furthermore, the institute has articulated plans to expand its existing campuses within India to accommodate the burgeoning number of applicants.

At present, TISS operates from four distinguished campuses in Mumbai and Tuljapur in Maharashtra, along with two additional campuses situated in Hyderabad and Guwahati. The institute prides itself on housing a total student population of 8000. While the spatial limitations in Mumbai present challenges to further expansion, TISS remains steadfast in its commitment to developing its alternate campuses to effectively address the escalating demand for its esteemed programs.

TISS stands as an eminent institution in India's social sciences domain, offering four distinguished undergraduate programs, including BA in Social Sciences and BSc in Analytical and System Studies. The overwhelming response to recent admissions, witnessing a remarkable influx of 18,000 to 22,000 applications for a mere 30 available seats, serves as a poignant testament to the institute's laudable stature within the academic landscape.

During the unveiling of the NEP-compliant Skill Education and Innovative Teachers Education Program, Professor Madhushree Sekhar, the esteemed dean of TISS-SVE, expressed profound delight in introducing the skill education program, slated to commence in the academic year 2023-24. This forward-looking initiative provides an invigorating opportunity for students seeking skill education and teachers' training at TISS, marking a fresh chapter in their academic journey.

In addition to its compelling global expansion plans, TISS exhibits its commitment to addressing the United Nations' sustainable development goals. The institute diligently endeavours to craft academic programs that effectively align with these paramount objectives, further underscoring its unwavering dedication to fostering holistic and socially impactful education.

As TISS embarks on this transformative path of international outreach, it remains steadfast in its core mission of nurturing excellence in social sciences education and research.
