Kolkata, : St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, through its prestigious Xavier’s Law School, is organizing a Two-Day National Workshop titled “UDGAM 2025” on 16th and 17th October 2025. The workshop focuses on the theme “Honour Culture and Crimes”, addressing the intersection of law, society, and human emotions in cases where collective prestige overshadows individual rights.
UDGAM 2025
The workshop is designed to explore the legal, social, and emotional dimensions of honour culture and related crimes. Conceptualized as an academic and reflective initiative, UDGAM 2025 aims to enrich legal education by prompting students to critically evaluate the existing legal frameworks, judicial interpretations, and human rights implications associated with honour-based violence.
Through panel discussions, performances, and interactive sessions, the event encourages participants to understand honour culture and its associated forms of violence — not merely as isolated incidents but as deeply rooted societal and legal challenges.
Theme in Focus
At the heart of the workshop lies an exploration of “Honour Culture”, where societal expectations often place collective prestige above individual autonomy. The discussions will shed light on how women, in particular, bear the burden of preserving family honour — with transgressions such as inter-community love, premarital relationships, or choosing singlehood often leading to social backlash or even violence.
The event aims to help law students and legal practitioners reflect on the intersection of tradition, patriarchy, and criminal law, emphasizing the need for empathy-driven and context-aware advocacy.
Why It Matters for Law Students
“UDGAM 2025” is not just an academic event — it’s a vital step toward holistic legal understanding. The workshop expands the discussion beyond statutes and theory, urging students to comprehend the social dynamics and emotional realities that shape crimes related to honour.
By doing so, participants will gain insights into how various stakeholders in the criminal justice system function and interact, equipping them for more sensitive and human-centered legal practice in the future.
