Chennai: SSN Institutions and Shiv Nadar University Chennai award scholarships worth Rs. 5 crores to 500 students from the two institutions in a joint ceremony. Shri. Ravichandran Ashwin, Indian International cricketer and an alumnus of 2008 IT Batch, SSN College of Engineering graced the occasion as the chief guest. The other dignitaries present included Dr. Kala Vijayakumar, Pro Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University Chennai and President of SSN Institutions, Dr. Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya, Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University Chennai and Dr. V. E. Annamalai, Principal, SSN College of Engineering.

The scholarships awarded are part of the institutions’ philanthropic venture to ensure no meritorious student is deprived of an education due to financial constraints, in addition to identifying and nurturing young talent in academics and sports. SSN Institutions has been awarding scholarships to meritorious students under different categories since 1999, and has in this period awarded scholarships worth Rs 81 crore to over 9000 students.

The chief guest for the function, also an SSN Alumnus, Ashwin Ravichandran shared about his journey from college to becoming a reputed cricketer representing the Indian cricket team at the international level. Congratulating the scholarship recipients, Ashwin had a special message for the students through his life story. He said, “When I was studying at SSN, my day would start at 5.00 AM and end at 9.00 in the night. When I left the college, I genuinely felt that SSN has prepared me for all the challenges that life had to throw at me. It’s a look-back story, nothing in life comes easy, challenges and competition will only increase as you move along. This is exactly what I learnt during my time at SSN. As you go through all the hardships, remember you are training for what life has in store for you. For me - when I say SSN, it represents only one thing, Excellence. Remember excellence is not a destination, it’s the journey. Success and Failures are milestones.”

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Kala Vijayakumar, Pro-Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University Chennai and President of SSN Institutions, spoke on the genesis of the scholarship scheme and shared, “Today, the Scholarship Scheme is driven not just by the institutions, but also by our socially conscious and responsible alumni. A representation of the strong bond they share with the institution; the SSN alumni contribute over Rs.10 Lakh every year to the Alumni scholarships for needy students. Our faculty, Dr. VS.Gayathri Professor and Head of Chemistry has also donated a corpus of Rs. 5 lakhs to support the students.”

The Scholarship Scheme offers scholarships across various categories, to all eligible students of the Engineering and MBA programs, which include:

• Merit-based Scholarship- Awarded to top 2 to 3 rank holders of every department based on their academic performance and can cover up to 100% of their tuition fees.
• Merit cum Means Scholarship – Awarded to meritorious students from lower economic strata
• Waiver of Tuition Fees- Awarded to the first-year students of the institute who secure the highest marks in their 10+2 examinations. Through this scholarship, the students can avail 100% tuition fee waiver for the first academic year. Similarly, senior students can also benefit from this basis their previous year’s performance.
• Walk-in-Walk-out Scholarships- Awarded to the Top 10 Rank holders of any State or Central Board Examination at the 10+2 or any equivalent level who are keen to pursue B.E. or B.Tech. degree. The students can avail 100% tuition fee waiver.
• Scholarship to Toppers of Rural Government Higher Secondary Schools – acronymed as SPURS – Scholarship for Potential Undergraduate Rural Students this special scholarship scheme is for 25 Government School Toppers from rural areas who are keen to pursue B.E. or B.Tech degree at SSN College of Engineering. Such students are awarded a scholarship to study completely free of cost including boarding for their entire duration of study.
• Post Graduate Scholarships- Awarded to students who want to study an M.E. or M. Tech. program in Engineering from SSN. The students are selected basis their University rank or GATE score of 90+ percentile.
• Sports Scholarships- This is for students who have an outstanding record in sports. Students who have represented the State at National level competitions conducted by accredited Sports Boards are also eligible for the same.
• Alumni Scholarship- This is awarded by the SSN Alumni Association basis an interview and academic performance. This is only available to over 30 students every year. This year, over 100 alumni have contributed to the scheme.
• Special Scholarships- This is awarded to students who have an outstanding record in Indian classical music.
