Roorkee - IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand | January 28, 2026: IIT Roorkee hosted the grand culmination of Virasat 2026, the flagship cultural festival of SPIC MACAY, at the Convocation Hall. The week-long festival concluded with a spiritually enriching Qawwali performance by the renowned Rampur Warsi, marking a powerful and memorable finale.
Organised by the SPIC MACAY IIT Roorkee Chapetr, the closing ceremony witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of five institutions, along with faculty members, administration and distinguished guests, including senior leadership of SPIC MACAY and the institute.
The grand Qawawalli performance beautifully reflected India's syncretic cultural traditions and strongly resonated with the festival's Central theme of mental well-being through indian classical arts forms. The event highlighted how cultural engagement plays a vital role in nurturing emotionally balanced and socially aware individuals.
Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, said that the National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes holistic education that integrates intellectual growth with cultural and ethical values. He added that Virasat 2026 exemplifies this vision by immersing students in India’s rich artistic traditions and fostering creativity, empathy, and a deeper connection with India’s civilizational heritage.
Deputy Director of IIT Roorkee, Prof. U. P. Singh, emphasized the importance of SPIC MACAY in providing alternative learning experiences. He noted that such a platforms enable students to experience the depth and relevance of India's classical and folk traditions within modern academic spaces, contributing to the all round development of students.
Throughout the week, Virasat, 2026 featured a diverse range of performances, workshops and screenings, including Indian classical dance, Hindustani vocals, Gurbani, crafts and cinema. These activities underlined the broader objective of integrating cultural creativity and well-being into campus life in alignment with the Government of India's vision for holistic youth development and Viksit Bharat.
The successful aayojan reaffirmed IIT Roorkee’s commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also cultural consciousness and emotional well-being among students.
