GANGTOK, SIKKIM, Sikkim National Law University (SNLU), a premier state-established institution, has formally announced the organization of a significant two-day event titled "International Conference on Development, Democracy, and Rule of Law: Reimagining India's Socio-Legal Landscape." The conference is tentatively scheduled to be held on April 25th and 26th, 2026, at the university's campus in Gangtok.
Established in 2018 under the Sikkim National Law University Act, SNLU has rapidly positioned itself as a center for legal excellence in the Himalayan region. This upcoming conference aims to foster a high-level academic dialogue by bringing together legal scholars, practitioners, and students to examine the evolving nature of India’s legal framework through an interdisciplinary lens. The university has identified a broad spectrum of sub-themes that will serve as the foundation for the two-day deliberations. These themes are designed to cover the most pressing issues in modern jurisprudence, including the deepening of democratic processes through constitutional governance and the intersection of law and policy with sustainable development goals.
Additional focus areas will include strategies for strengthening rule of law institutions to ensure better access to justice and an analysis of how economic reforms and regulatory governance impact India's investment climate. Participants will also engage in discussions regarding rights, identity, and the legal pathways toward inclusive development, alongside the role of education and media in fostering civic participation. A dedicated session will look toward the future, exploring how technology and innovation are reshaping the legal landscape, while a specialized track will focus on the unique socio-legal context of development and democracy within the state of Sikkim.
Operating under the chancellorship of the Hon'ble Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, SNLU is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is governed by an Executive and Academic Council. The university is well-regarded for its integrated 5-Year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) program and its research-intensive 1-Year LL.M. in Constitutional Law and Human Rights. The institution prides itself on its commitment to social justice, offering specialized scholarship programs and free legal education for underprivileged students and those living below the poverty line. Its infrastructure supports these academic goals with smart classrooms, a dedicated moot court hall for advocacy training, and a comprehensive central library stocked with essential legal databases and journals.
Scholars and interested parties are invited to contact the university for more information regarding abstract submissions and registration timelines.
