Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026: Education Ministry to Launch Youth Innovation Programme at IISc Bengaluru
New Delhi: The Seva First Innovation Challenge (SFIC) 2026 is set to be launched by Union Minister for Education Pralhad Joshi at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, on September 25. The initiative encourages young people to spot local problems and create solutions that can be tested, refined and implemented.
SFIC aims to connect students and young innovators with mentorship, technical resources and opportunities for deploying their ideas.
Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026: Who Can Participate?
As per the Ministry of Education, the challenge will feature participation from schools, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), polytechnics, colleges and universities. SFIC has three participation levels:
- Junior: Classes 6 to 12 students can identify local problems and create simple working solutions or well-reasoned ideas about services and governance.
- Technical: Students from ITIs and polytechnics will work on hands-on engineering, fabrication, electronics and process-based solutions.
- Open: Undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research scholars will be expected to demonstrate prototypes or pilot projects with a credible pathway towards deployment.
This approach ensures participation across different educational stages, and young innovators can engage with the challenge according to their technical experience level.
Five States and Three Union Territories Covered
The Seva First Innovation Challenge 2026 will feature participation across five states and three Union Territories. The participating regions are:
- Karnataka
- Tamil Nadu
- Keralam
- Andhra Pradesh
- Telangana
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Lakshadweep
- Puducherry
The focus on regions enables students to address issues arising from communities and environments that they know well.
Five National Themes for SFIC 2026
The challenge will feature five broad national themes:
- Clean and Sustainable Bharat
- Prosperous Farmers, Prosperous Bharat
- Healthy and Inclusive Bharat
- Educated and Skilled Bharat
- Secure Bharat
These themes cover areas such as sustainability, agriculture, health, education and security, providing young people with diverse avenues of addressing both community-level and broader society problems.
Seva First Innovation Challenge Registration Dates
As per the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, registration will be open from September 25 to October 24, 2026. The initiative will culminate in a National Finale in New Delhi from December 10 to 17, 2026.

Mentorship, Labs and Support for Young Innovators
One of the key aspects of the challenge is its emphasis on supporting ideas to move beyond a purely hypothetical stage. Participants will have access to academic and industry mentorship, laboratories, fabrication, testing support, incubation, seed and pilot funding, field-testing opportunities and guidance on intellectual property protection, as per the Ministry of Education.
Promising solutions may also be connected with Central and State government ministries, urban and rural local bodies, public sector undertakings and industry for possible adoption. This approach is particularly relevant for students whose ideas require technical facilities and expert guidance to move from an initial concept to a working prototype.
IISc Bengaluru to be Nodal Institute
The Union Education Ministry, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grants Commission (UGC) are jointly organising the challenge, with IISc Bengaluru as the nodal institute. The Ministry said the initiative aims to foster a culture of community-rooted innovation, encouraging young people to move from identifying problems to creating solutions and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
