Who Can Apply for the Summer Research Fellowship?

The fellowship is open to motivated students and teachers from universities and colleges affiliated with UGC, AICTE, MCI, accredited institutions and private universities.

Eligibility for Students

According to the official instructions, students should be enrolled in specified years of the following programmes:

• BS / BSc – second year only

• BSc (Research) – third year only

• BStat / BMath – second year only

• BPharm – third and fourth years

Eligibility for Teachers

Teachers applying for the fellowship must be teaching in a college or university. The minimum percentage requirement applicable to students does not apply to teachers.

Academic Performance Requirement

For student applicants, the minimum average marks in core subjects only, excluding languages, from Class X through the latest completed level up to postgraduate studies must be 65% or above.

The 65% minimum average marks requirement does not apply to teachers.

PhD students are not eligible to apply for the programme. Applicants who have already availed the Academies fellowship twice are also not eligible.

What Does the Fellowship Offer?

The selected candidates will work with scientists associated with the three Academies on short-term research projects.

The fellowship is for two months, and the selected candidate can undertake the work at any time during the calendar year 2027, although the Academies state that the summer period is preferred.

Candidates can select from the list of scientists and faculty members who have consented to guide students and teachers on short-term projects. The list is available through the online application system.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the application online in the prescribed format.

Student applicants are required to provide the email address of one of their current teachers who is familiar with their work. The Academy will contact the teacher to obtain a recommendation letter in the prescribed format.

Applicants should prepare the required academic documents before starting the application.

The official instructions state that:

• Mark sheets from Class X through the latest examination must be uploaded.

• Mark sheets must be scanned in JPEG format.

• Each mark sheet file should not exceed 700 KB.

• Only one application per candidate will be considered.

• If more than one application is submitted, none of the applications will be considered.

Write-Up Required from Applicants

Candidates are required to provide a write-up of approximately 150–250 words explaining their specific area of interest and what they want to learn and achieve through the fellowship.

The write-up can also mention a specific experiment or theory the applicant would like to work on.

The Academies specifically state that this should not be a general description of the subject area and should not be copied and pasted from another source.

Teacher applicants must upload their publications, if any.

If selected, teacher applicants must obtain an authorisation letter from their Principal or Head of Department granting the required permission or leave of absence.
