Samagra Shiksha Pushes for School Development as NEP 2020 Policies Begin Implementation
The Indian school system is undergoing a major paradigm shift within the Indian system of school education. Samagra Shiksha continues to be a mainstay for driving this initiative. With a strong intent to advance quality education, the Ministry of Education, through a central social scheme explains how the central social scheme focuses on the development of school infrastructure, improvements in learning outcomes, and promotes inclusive education as per the NEP 2020.
The Ministry explains the overarching impact of the program through a social media post and explains how school development, teacher empowerment, and student improvement lead to an equitable education system for the country.
An Integrated Strategy for School Education
Samagra Shiksha was launched in 2018 and integrates school education from the pre-school stage to the 12th class. The scheme enhances the quality of institutional learning, learner engagement, teaching personnel, and instructional facilities. The scheme has also been designed in view of the NEP 2020 recommendations, wherein the triad of access, equity, and quality is equally important.
The Ministry also stated that strengthening school education entails investments in schools, teachers, and educational materials, and ensures that no child is left behind.
PARAKH Survey Assesses Learning Outcomes Across the Nation
One accomplishment that the Ministry shared was the scope of the PARAKH Survey, NEP 2020, and Competency-Based Learning and Assessment, which is India’s largest survey-based learning assessment. Officially, it is stated that the survey covered over 21.15 lakh learners, 2.70 lakh teaching personnel, and schools The assessment compiles information on school infrastructure, teaching practices, digital and other resource accessibility, and classroom environments and provides policymakers with an informed view of the school education ecosystem.
Infrastructure and Student Support Remain a Priority
Samagra Shiksha provides funding to States and Union Territories for multiple activities that provide more people with access to quality education. The program provides funding for the opening and strengthening of schools to the senior secondary level, building new school buildings and classroom blocks, and upgrading and improving the infrastructure and the residential facilities of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. The program also provides funding for eligible students’ free uniforms and textbooks, transportation, special needs learning materials, and the appropriate pupil-teacher ratio.
The goal of all these activities is to provide all children, regardless of their learning environment, with access to quality education.
Focus on Inclusive and Equitable Education
An aim of NEP 2020 is to increase the inclusivity of education. Samagra Shiksha clearly reflects the objective by providing children with disabilities with assistive devices, Braille, learning materials, and scholarships when relevant.
The program also provides support to the improvement of girls’ and disadvantaged groups’ boarding schools and, therefore, provides support to the improvement of the enrollment and retention of disadvantaged groups and educational equity.
Teachers and Educational Reform
