Bengaluru: Complaints regarding the miscommunication and technical glitches came in after KCET results were announced on Saturday. The problem started when 2nd PUC repeater students- who were promoted in the year 2021 based on their 10th grade and 1st PUC scores found out that their 2nd PUC scores were not considered to decide their KCET results.

Based on the announcement made by KEA it was said that this year’s ranks of the CET candidates were to be considered based on 50% of their PU marks and 50% of the CET scores. This was not the same as the last year’s PU exams were cancelled due to the pandemic and CET ranks were announced based on the KCET-2021 scores. This decision to give equal importance to both PU and CET marks has resulted in a drop in the ranks of repeaters.

The KEA officials maintained to follow the government’s old rule to rank the 2021 batch of 2nd PUC students. However, the candidates felt betrayed by this method of ranking as they weren’t informed priorly about this and they felt it was unfair that the 2nd PU marks of others were considered but not theirs.

A parent said that there was no circular nor any announcement from KEA that the repeater students results were based on last year’s practice. “We visited the KEA office and repeatedly asked the officials. We were assured 2nd PUC marks would be included. The future of our children is at stake because KEA messed up”, the parent said.

This variation in computing of ranks has cost several students thousands of ranks. One student from the 2021 batch said that she scored 91 in last year’s CET and was given a ranking of 8,000. This year, with a higher score of 106, she has been ranked 57,000. “A student of the 2022 batch with the same score as mine has a rank of 3,000 as 2nd PUC marks have been included. But we are left with only CET scores,” she said, claiming that grade 12 marks of the CBSE repeater students have been considered.

The parents are considering approaching the High Court with their concerns. Many repeater students have decided to appear for CET again as they are disappointed with their results. The drop in their ranks have made many in a state of bind. With hours of declaration of the KCET results the #JusticefroKCETdroppers was trending on twitter.

A student replied to minister Ashwath Narayan’s tweet declaring results: “Total injustice for droppers. WE faced all struggles and gave one year for our dream rank in college. But what kind of rank inflation have you done…. Last year, my engineering ranking was around 9000 but I scored about 60 marks more than last year but got 45,000 rank (sic).”

Some parents complained that despite them uploading CBSE marksheets, their children’s ranks were withheld.

Ramya S, Executive director of KEA, said several other CBSE students were able to upload their marksheets, so a technical glitch is ruled out. “However, those who have faced an issue can email their marksheet to our official ID and we will issue them a spot rank,” she said, adding spot ranks will not affect ranks of other candidates and will be a decimal between two numbers.
