Hong Kong - The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has officially announced that Professor Ngo Bao Chau will join its Department of Mathematics under the Faculty of Science from June 2026. The appointment comes after Chau’s long and distinguished tenure at the University of Chicago, where he has worked since 2010.

Born in Hanoi in 1972, Ngo Bao Chau rose to international prominence after proving the fundamental lemma, a groundbreaking achievement in number theory. This landmark contribution earned him the Fields Medal in 2010, widely regarded as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics.

Chau’s academic excellence was evident from an early age. As a student at the High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University, he became the first Vietnamese student to win two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1988 and 1989. He later pursued higher studies in France under a government scholarship and earned his PhD at the age of 25 from the University of Paris-Sud.

In 2003, he completed his habilitation at the University of Paris-North and was appointed professor at the University of Paris-Sud in 2004, becoming Vietnam’s youngest professor at the time.

Alongside his international academic career, Chau has also contributed significantly to Vietnam’s scientific development as the Scientific Director of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.

HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Xiang Zhang stated that Chau’s appointment represents an important milestone in HKU’s pursuit of global academic excellence and strengthens its position as a hub for world-class research and talent.
