Rajasthan Principal Suspended: A Closer Look at the Case
A principal of a government school in Alwar, Rajasthan, has been placed under the spotlight after a video purportedly showing him along with several girl students of his school at a dam, circulated on social media platforms. Lal Chand Meena, the principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Raubavi Padak Chhapli at Thanagazi, has been placed under suspension by the Directorate of Secondary Education, Bikaner, after videos containing objectionable content with him and girl students of the school went viral.
It is said that his suspension has been partly due to his conduct being against the provisions of the conduct of government servants. An inquiry has been ordered under Rule 13(1) of the Rajasthan Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1958.
What Happened at the Dam?
This incident is said to have taken place on August 15, 2026, after the school’s Independence Day program. According to various media reports, Meena, along with around 200 students in the upper classes, went to the dam, which is around 2 km away from the school. Concern was expressed by the parents and locals after a video showing the students swimming, posted after the visit was posted on social media.
It is also reported that the Meena took the students to the dam which has about 11 feet of water and bathing in the dam is prohibited because of the possibility of drowning. These reports form part of the information available to the authorities and are the things which the authorities are currently investigating.
Why is there an Inquiry?
The incident creates more complications than just the viral video. Questions are being raised over:
- The reason for the school visits to the dam.
- If sufficient supervision was provided.
- The safety measures in place.
- If the destination was an appropriate place for a school trip.
- If students were allowed to enter the water.
- If the principal breached government employee norms.
- If all the school and student safety protocols were in place.
The education department has stated that it is conducting this inquiry to determine the next steps for disciplinary action.
Three-Member Inquiry Committee
As per reports, a three-member committee has been formed to examine the incident. The committee will need to take statements and evaluate the video and the circumstances of the student outing. The conclusion from this committee will determine if departmental actions are required to be taken. The suspension has been ordered to be served in the Directorate of Secondary Education, Bikaner. What are the Police Concerns?
The police have also started their probing.
As per the reports, the principal’s statement has been recorded by the police and the video and the situation of the students' visit has been reviewed by the police. The most important detail in the recent reports is that the police had not received any written complaint by a student or parent at this time of the report.
It can therefore be said that a police investigation is being conducted, but it would not be right to say that a principal has been accused of a criminal offense.
How Many Students Were Involved?
It has been reported that 200+ students were taken to the location. Additionally, local reporting has documented the presence of approximately 20–25 older girls with the water activity. Since these numbers relate to different groups, they cannot be considered to represent the total number of students who were taken to the location. The investigation is ongoing to determine the specifics about individual students.
What Happens to the Principal Now?
Due to the suspension, no legal implications have been established against the principal. It will be for the departmental inquiry to determine if the principles have been breached in the matter of service and conduct. A criminal offence, if any, will be investigated by the police. Until either of these inquiries is completed, any comments about any such offences should be viewed as comments on alleged offences, which are yet to be established.
