New Delhi : In order to enhance the quality of education and research in India, E. Balagurusamy, the former vice-chancellor of Anna University, has requested the Union government to increase funds for education."The goal of doubling Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) from the current 26.3% to 50% by 2035 indicates doubling the capacity of higher education in the country," he said, praising the goals of the National Education Policy 2020. The federal and state governments must invest far more as a result of this.
"While the spirit of NEP is in the right direction, it is practically an impossible task to implement its recommendations across the country without additional fund allocation," he said in an appeal to the Union Finance Minister that he shared with the media. An institution's capacity for innovation and research depends on the quality of its faculty and research facilities, both of which need financing.Prof. Balagurusamy stated, "The current spending on education is about 3.1% of Gross domestic product (GDP), and on research and development is 0.69% of GDP, which is low compared to other countries when the NEP has promised an allocation of 6% of GDP for education and 2% of GDP for research." It has been more than three years since the NEP was announced.
Prof. Balagurusamy stated that in recent years, education spending has remained unchanged at 10.5% of the total government budget, with only a tiny growth from 2.8% to 3.1% of GDP. Budget allocations should be raised. A well-defined structure for interconnection among numerous central ministries, regulatory organisations, state governments, and industries is required for the NEP to be implemented effectively. The structural, operational, and budgetary commitments of this framework must be specified in the budget allocations," he stated.
