Kharagpur : Professor Amit Patra, currently serving as the Director of IIT Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU), has been appointed as the interim Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He will hold this position until a permanent Director is appointed or further notice is issued.
An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Professor Patra brings extensive experience and a distinguished academic background to this additional role. He earned his BTech (1984), MTech (1986), and PhD (1990) from IIT Kharagpur and has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering since 1987. He currently holds the rank of Professor in the Higher Academic Grade Pay.
Professor Patra has previously held several key leadership positions at IIT Kharagpur, including Dean of Alumni Affairs and International Relations (2007–2013) and Deputy Director (2021–2024). He also played a pivotal role in establishing the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata, during 2020–2021.
Renowned for his expertise in power management circuits, mixed-signal VLSI design, fault diagnostics, prognostics, and embedded control systems, Professor Patra has made significant contributions to research and academia. He has received numerous academic honors and collaborated with leading institutions worldwide, including Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany, where he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1992–93 and 2000). He has also fostered academic collaborations with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (2003), and the University of Maryland, College Park (2016).
Between 2004 and 2007, he served as the professor in charge of the Advanced VLSI Design Lab at IIT Kharagpur. His appointment as interim Director marks another milestone in his illustrious career, and his leadership is expected to further strengthen IIT Kharagpur’s academic and research endeavors.
