Prof. Pawan Sharma nominated for Fulbright Scholar in Residence Fellowship

Under this Fellowship, he will spend an academic session at the Wesleyan University in the United States of America.

 Haryana.: Prof. Pawan Kumar Sharma of Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh, Department of
Chemistry has been nominated for the highly prestigious Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence fellowship. This
year, the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, Washington D.C. has approved 46 scholars in diverse
disciplines from 30 countries across six continents under the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program. He
is the first scholar from Haryana who has been bestowed with this award. Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar,
Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Haryana (CUH), while congratulating Prof. Pawan Sharma for
this achievement said “it is a great honour for a young University like the Central University of Haryana
that a senior Professor of the University and an internationally acclaimed researcher has been nominated
for this prestigious fellowship. Not only will it bring both National and International visibility for the
CUH, but it will also provide opportunities to open up long term collaborations between CUH and the
American Universities. Scientific and cultural exchange with the scientists from around the globe will
nurture new possibilities of research and teaching at CUH that our students can take advantage of in times
to come.”
Under this Fellowship, he will spend an academic session at the Wesleyan University in the United States
of America. Professor Pawan has earlier been conferred with Fulbright-Nehru International Education
Administrators Award 2019 by the United States-India Educational Foundation, Srinivasa Ramanujan
Birth Centenary Gold Medal 2018 by Indian Science Congress Association, Bronze Medal 2018 by
Chemical Research Society of India, National Award 2012 by Indian Chemical Society and many more.
He also holds the distinction of being the first and the only scientist from Haryana nominated as member
scientist in the XXI Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica.
He is Editorial Board member of journal ‘Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Patents’ published by Bentham
Science Publishers, Honorary Senior Advisor of journal ‘Current Indian Science’ and reviewer of a
number of the prestigious international research journals published by the American Chemical Society,
Royal Society of Chemistry, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley etc.
The Fulbright Fellowships, established in 1946, is the U.S. government's flagship international academic
exchange program through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) at the Department
of State. It operates in over 160 countries worldwide and provides participants - chosen for their academic
merit and leadership potential - with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas
and contribute to finding solutions to shared international challenges. Within the Fulbright bouquet, the
Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program brings visiting scholars from around the globe to United States’
colleges and universities, helping the institutions internationalize their campuses and curricula and
diversify the educational experiences of their students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community.
Internationally, Fulbright scholars are regarded as highly respected specialists in their fields and earning a
Fulbright fellowship is considered as an extraordinary honor for the Scholar and the parent University that
recognizes the scholar’s preeminence and influence in their discipline while improving the international
visibility of the parent University.
When contacted, Prof. Pawan said that availing this Fellowship will certainly provide him first-hand
exposure to the American academia and pedagogy, in-person collaboration between Wesleyan and CUH
and a better grasp of the American science culture by experiencing the multi-ethnic, multicultural
communities of the United States. He further stated that after availing this award, he will return back to
CUH with an expanded worldview, a deep appreciation for the U.S. higher education system and its
people, and a new network of colleagues and friends with a potential to expand the higher education
landscape at CUH. The fellowship and the associated scientific and cultural exchange will certainly help
in further strengthening the benchmarking of teaching and research at the Central University of Haryana.
