PM Modi Inaugurates Temporary Campus of IIM Guwahati, Boosts Higher Education in Northeast

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the temporary campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati on February 14, 2026, Saturday, during his visit to Assam marking a significant expansion of management education infrastructure in the North-Eastern region.

The inauguration forms a part of a broader development push in the state with projects worth ₹5,450 crore launched on the same day. Key initiatives included the six-lane Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu Bridge over the Brahmaputra River, the establishment of a National Data Centre for the Northeast at Amingaon, and flagging off 225 electric buses for urban centres across assam.

IIM Guwahati becomes the second IIM in the Northeast after IIM Shillong and the 22nd IIM in the country. The union government approved its establishment in 2025 through the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, granting it the status of an Institution of National Importance.IIM Guwahati will begin its academic operations from a transit campus at Tech City, Bongora, under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad. The permanent campus is planned at Palasbari near Guwahati with a proposed investment of ₹555 crore. The inauguration of IIM Guwahati is expected to expand access to premier management education for students across the Northeast, strengthen academic infrastructure, and contribute to skill development aligned with emerging economic needs. The move also reinforces the centre’s policy focus on quality higher education institutions in underserved and aspirational regions.

With the launch of an IIM, Guwahati in Assam as a city further consolidates its position as an emerging hub in the Northeast, complementing existing institutions like IIT and AIIMS in the region. The initiative is viewed as a strategic step toward decentralising premier educational institutions and promoting balanced regional developmental through academic excellence.
