New Delhi: Professor Mohammad Shakeel has been confirmed as the officiating Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) by President Droupadi Murmu.
According to an official notice, “The Hon’ble President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), exercising the powers conferred by the Act or Statutes of the University, has approved the appointment of Prof. Mohammad Shakeel as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor as per Statute 2(6) of the JMI Act, 1988.”
This appointment follows the university's decision on May 22 to appoint Mohammad Shakeel as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor, after the Delhi High Court quashed the appointment of Eqbal Hussain. The court directed the university to make a fresh appointment within a week, stating that Hussain's appointments as Pro-Vice Chancellor and subsequently as Officiating Vice-Chancellor were not in accordance with the relevant statutes.
Professor Eqbal Hussain challenged Mohammad Shakeel’s appointment in the Delhi High Court, arguing that the new appointment was illegal and arbitrary. However, the court upheld Shakeel's appointment.
Meanwhile, JMI’s former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Najma Akhtar, was recently honored with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award-Academia’ presented by Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar (Padma Vibhushan) at the Grand Conference and award function titled “Making India Employable,” organized by TeamLease EdTech.
